In the past, Lewis Hamilton has disclosed that he wears the number 44 on his vehicle out of sentimentality. Since 2014, when permanent numbers were added to cars in Formula One, the seven-time world champion has had the number. During his pre-F1 career, Hamilton had 44 on his vehicles. Drivers’ numbers were determined by their position on the Drivers’ Championship scoreboard when he made his Formula One debut with McLaren.When drivers were told they could choose their own numbers and stick with them for the duration of their careers ten years ago, that changed. Hamilton picked number 44 since his family and supporters could recognize it. The soon-to-be Ferrari star told F1.com two years ago, “That’s the number we raced with for many years, and then when I joined Formula One, I had to be whatever the team asked me to be.”Later in my career, they made the decision to let the drivers select just one number, which would be their number for all time. I returned to the number where it all began.It is the number that has been devoted to me and my supporters, and it is the one that my family recognized the most. After working for Mercedes for 12 years, Hamilton is joining Ferrari. Performance problems and personal inconsistency marred his final three years with the Silver Arrows.In 2021, the 39-year-old narrowly lost to Max Verstappen on the last lap of the year, missing out on a record eighth world title.
