As the new year approaches, so does a wave of brand freshly released films on Netflix. The month of January will see lots of brand new movies, including the streamer’s first Originals of 2025. We will also get our first look at a feel-good baseball movie making its SVOD debut, and a fantastically funny and compelling dramedy from A24 will finally be able to reach a wider audience via the Netflix platform. This is just a small dose of the gigantic portions the world’s most popular streaming service will be offering in January 2025.
So where do you start with all these options? I’ve put together an article that highlights the six biggest releases on Netflix to start the new year. Below, you can find trailers and plot breakdowns for each film, as well as dates when those movies will become available. Long-time fans of Wallace and Gromit will welcome the return of everyone’s favorite eccentric inventor and his loyal dog in this brand-new stop-motion adventure. And if you’ve never seen one of their delightful movies? Well, based on the trailer, it seems like a great entry point. In Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Wallace creates his latest greatest invention, Norbot, a “smart-gnome” designed to handle gardening chores. But things quickly spiral out of control when Norbot seemingly takes on a mind of its own, and Wallace and Gromit discover that none other than Feathers McGraw (the villainous jewel thief from a previous film in the series, The Wrong Trousers) is back with a devious plan for revenge. Directed by Aardman Animations legends Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham (who were both also involved in the Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run movies), the latest Wallace and Gromit adventure appears to retain the franchise’s signature charm, combining slapstick comedy, visual gags and heartwarming charm for a time-tested, widely adored formula unmatched by other animation studios.

Back in Action (2025)
After ten years away from the Hollywood machine, which included a retirement announcement back in 2018, Cameron Diaz makes her return to the screen with the fittingly titled Back in Action. Reunited with Jamie Foxx (they starred in both Any Given Sunday and Annie together), this action-comedy stars the duo as Emily and Matt, former CIA spies who have traded in their covert missions for the quiet life of raising a family. But when their cover is unexpectedly blown, the couple is thrust back into the dangerous world of espionage. With enemies closing in and their past catching up to them, Emily and Matt must rely on their old skills (and each other) to survive a globe-trotting adventure. Directed by Seth Gordon (who also gave us Horrible Bosses and Baywatch), this spy thriller aims to deliver family-friendly comedy, as well as clever banter from Diaz and Foxx as they channel their undeniable chemistry. The supporting cast includes Kyle Chandler, Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts and Rylan Jackson.

Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever (2024)
Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever offers a fascinating look at the life and mission of tech millionaire Bryan Johnson, who has turned his pursuit of eternal youth into a full-time endeavor. Directed by documentary connoisseur Chris Smith (Tiger King and Fyre), who brings his signature blend of curiosity and incisive storytelling such a fantastical-yet-very-real tale, this deep dive captures Johnson’s extreme anti-aging regimen, which includes a multimillion-dollar annual investment in medical procedures, cutting-edge technology and rigorous daily routines. Through intimate access to Johnson’s personal and professional life, the film explores his obsession with reversing the effects of aging—and the ethical implications of such a quest. This insightful film alternates between Johnson’s highly regimented lifestyle and revealing personal interviews with friends, family and medical professionals, as well as broader discussions with experts about humanity’s long-standing desire to conquer mortality.

American Primeval (2025)
Okay, so technically this isn’t a movie. But many people treat a limited series as one long movie, so in this case, the material is exciting enough that I believe it’s worth highlighting. American Primeval, the latest epic western to hit TV screens, plunges viewers into the unforgiving landscape of the American frontier in 1857, following a tapestry of interconnected lives as they navigate the brutal, lawless terrain of the West. At the center of this six-episode series is Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), a man haunted by his past who is forced to face the savage wilderness for survival. Other key storylines feature characters like Sara (Betty Gilpin), a composed widow who is searching for a guide to cross the frontier with her curious son, Devin (Preston Mota), as well as Jacob (Dane DeHaan), a conflicted Mormon patriarch who leads his family west while his wife, Abish (Saura Lightfoot-Leon), resists her constrained role. More great actors, like Jai Courtney, Kyle Bradley Davis, Derek Hinkey and Shea Whigham make up the cast of this gritty and visceral exploration of the early American West directed by Peter Berg.

You Gotta Believe (2024)
Making its SVOD debut via Netflix, You Gotta Believe chronicles the true story of a scrappy Little League baseball team that rallied around their ailing coach, Bobby Ratliff (Luke Wilson). Determined to honor their coach’s legacy, the team embarks on a seemingly impossible journey that culminates in a record-breaking showdown on ESPN. This sort of film could be over-sappy, but many critics claim the formula works really well, thriving on its embrace of sentimentality as it weaves themes of hope, resilience and community into its familiar structure. Wilson anchors the film with his tough yet vulnerable character, while Kinnear balances things with warmth and compassion. While the plot follows expected beats of triumph and struggle, Ty Roberts’ direction ensures the film remains heartfelt throughout without veering into saccharine territory. As a throwback to the wholesome sports dramas of the ’70s and ’80s, some believe You Gotta Believe to be a rarity in modern cinema—a family-friendly film that wears its optimism proudly on its sleeve.
