Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian announced that the team will not hold its traditional Orange-White spring football game in 2025. This decision stems from the need to focus on integrating a significant number of new players into the team. With 22 freshmen and five new transfers joining the roster, Sarkisian emphasized the importance of dedicating time to their development during spring practices. He stated that foregoing the spring game allows the coaching staff to build a solid foundation for these players, ensuring they understand the team’s practices, drills, and foundational aspects of offense, defense, and special teams.
Additionally, Sarkisian highlighted the physical demands the team has faced, having played 30 games over the past two seasons due to consecutive College Football Playoff appearances. He noted that eliminating the spring game helps manage player wear and tear, aligning with a more NFL-style approach to offseason activities.
While other programs have cited concerns about player tampering during the spring transfer portal window as reasons for canceling their spring games, Sarkisian dismissed this as a factor in Texas’ decision. He expressed confidence in the culture established within the program, believing it would deter players from considering transfers.
In place of the spring game, Texas plans to host a fan fest on April 26, aiming to maintain fan engagement and support during the offseason.
